TV Show Favourites

I am a huge lover of TV shows and because we are all currently stuck with these dark, cold, winter nights (the joy of Christmas over and summer still too far away) I thought it would be quite nice to do a post about my all time favourite TV shows. I'm hoping that those of you reading this have either seen these shows and think "Ooh, I've not watched that in ages! I think I'll give it a watch again..." or even better "I haven't seen that one and I'm looking for something new to watch. This looks good so I'll give it a go!"

This time of year is perfect for cosying up on the sofa or in bed to binge watch your favourite shows and thanks to Netflix it's so much easier that it was a few years ago. You don't need to frantically search for which friend has a boxset you can borrow, or spend all your money on buying said boxset for yourself. I remember having to wait until Christmas to get the next season on boxset.
I watch a lot of TV shows, however, I have managed to narrow it down to a Top 5. Although I can choose my all time fav from that list (which I will come to last), I don't have any particular order for the rest of them - they are all equally great in my eyes!

The Vampire Diaries
This show is fantastic. I remember when it first aired in the UK and my sister came into my room raving about this new show and telling me that I HAD to watch it. It didn't sound like something I would like to be honest, but I decided if Tasha was complementing it so much I should at least give it a watch. I was hooked in the first 5 minutes of episode 1! The show centres on the main character, Elena - a teenage girl living in a small town in America - and the rivalry between two mysterious brothers Stefan & Damon who both fall in love with her. There is lots of drama, humour, heartache and happiness and is basically just a really exciting story to follow. I reckon most people who want to probably watch this now as there has been so much hype about it over the years but I can go back and watch it through over and over again - it doesn't get boring.

The American Office
This show is an absolute genius creation of Ricky Gervais'. I was introduced to this by my boyfriend only last year and it was immediately one of my favs! The idea is that a film crew are in an office filming the day-to-day running of a paper company and so follow the lives of the office workers on a daily basis. The show consists of interviews with the employees and the manager as well as seeing them going about their daily business. I think the thing that makes this show is the amazing characters and the hilarious relationships between them. It sucks you in to their different stories and I swear you will feel like you are a part of their world when you're watching it. If you like something simple and hilarious you will LOVE this!

Bones
Again, I have someone else to thank for introducing me to this amazing show. My parents started watching this when it first aired in the UK and loved it so much that they started buying the boxsets whenever they came out. I was having dinner with them one night and it was on and I couldn't take my eyes away from the tele. I then spent the rest of the weekend binge watching the first 2 seasons on DVD boxset to catch up with my parents. It became a tradition that every Wednesday night, we would sit down together and watch the latest episode. Bones follows a forensic team and how they work together with the FBI to solve different murders. When people say "Oh, so it's just like CSI then?" I want to tear my hair out. Personally, I think it is a lot more fun to watch, as the characters are much more likeable and there is a lot of humour in it as well to lighten the tough and sometimes gory murders they are investigating. A must see if you like forensic and investigatory shows!

Friends
I'm not sure what I can say about Friends that almost everyone doesn't already know. I've seen all 10 seasons so many times that I usually just have it on in the background these days whilst I'm doing other things. This sitcom follows the lives of 6 friends living in New York and their ups and downs with work, relationships, friendships and family life. It's just a hilarious, feel good show that will have you laughing at the same jokes over and over again. Friends got me through so many stressful times whilst I was growing up. For example, whenever I had exams in school or university and had gotten fed up with studying and needed to just chill out, I would put Friends on. It's one of those shows that just instantly makes me feel happier and completely calm. If you haven't watched Friends or don't like Friends (my sister isn't a big fan!) then shame on you. Tut tut I say!

One Tree Hill
My all time favourite TV show is definitely One Tree Hill. I believe that every teenager should be watching this as they grow up through high school, like I did. In fact, I even hope that when I have my own kids they'll enjoy this series (even though it'll be very dated by then!). The show basically follows the lives of a group of high school students for the first 4 seasons, and then continues to follow them after leaving university in seasons 5-9. There are so many life lessons in the show and various things to relate to as a teenager, but also as a young adult and how to survive life once your education is finished. I think that's why I still love watching it so much, because the first 4 seasons take me back to my school days and the later seasons help me understand things that are happening in my life now in my twenties. You see how to survive broken friendships, hard relationships, grief, difficult family life and then the happiness and fun that can be had in life. I just everything about this show, from the character development and the messages behind the stories - it's just phenomenal!

This brings me to the end of this slightly different blog post and to my announcement. I have decided to do a blog series called "My Latest TV Series Review". Basically, because I watch a lot of new series, I am going to do a wee review of them for those of you interested in finding something new to watch. I'll also review shows I didn't like so much because let's face it - not everyone likes everything.

What are your favourite shows? I'm more than happy to hear suggestions of series to check out...
